On February 7, 2016, The Super Bowl returns to Northern California for the first time since 1985 when Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto hosted the game. In 2016 Santa Clara will host Super Bowl 50, also being called “The Golden Super Bowl” as it is the 50th anniversary of the game. Golden also refers to the fact that California, The Golden State, will host the game at the brand new Levi’s Stadium, the new home of the San Francisco 49ers. The Super Bowl started in 1967 as the championship game between the National Football League and the rival American Football League. Since 1970, when the leagues merged, the game has been contested by the winners of the NFL’s American and National Conferences. So revered is the game, it has become a de facto holiday. In fact, Super Bowl Sunday is second only to Thanksgiving in terms of one-day food consumption in America. The game is also enjoyed by millions around the world. From kickoff through the lavish half-time show, to the awarding of the Vince Lombardi Trophy to the triumphant team, the Super Bowl is a can’t-miss American spectacle.
