Cardinal Championship History -
The famous squad has won 13 conference championships and one NCAA title throughout its storied history. Their NCAA crown came in 1942, while they last competed in the Final Four in 1998. With all eyes on the future, their most recent conference title was in 2004. In other words, they’re due for another march to supremacy. With any luck, your support will help the Cardinal team soon again paint the championships red.
About the Mascot -
Dating back to the first "Big Game" football contest between Bay Area rivals, University of California Berkeley and Stanford, our local team’s color has been cardinal red. Between 1930-1972, an American Indian was the official school mascot, eventually drawing so much derision it was dropped. Then, the team was known simply as the Cardinals – the color, not the bird. Needless to say, this caused much confusion, and in 1981, the school president officially dropped the ‘s,’ and a new era of Cardinal sports began.
The Stanford Tree -
While there’s no official mascot for Stanford sports, a member of the school’s band wears an El Palo Alto redwood tree costume to major games and events, in honor of our city’s namesake flora, just 6 minutes from Cardinal country.
